Risky reading

Lucy Mangan talks about her love of secondhand bookshops in her Guardian column on Saturday. They’re the best places for finding unusual and interesting books you never knew you wanted and far removed from the online purchases most of us make now. When we buy online we’re guided by what Amazon recommends, in high street bookshops we tend to buy the books on the display tables and even in an independent bookshop the range will be limited. Lucy doesn’t mention public libraries but you can browse lots of weird and wonderful books here and take more risks with your reading than you would if you were actually buying the books. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like the books you borrow, just bring them back to us – they won’t have cost you anything!
